Yasukuni
Jinja.
Yasukuni Jinja is an establishment to worship Japanese war deads as Japanese deities.
Worshipping as deities is a Japanese traditional style of praying for the repose of people who fought in the war and met an ill end.
But, praying for the repose of deads is not a Japanese unique culture.
All nations are praying for the repose of people who fought and died for their nation.
For example, Arlington National Cemetery in America is it.
It can be said that Yasukuni Jinja for the Japanese is Arlington National Cemetery for the American.
「今回は靖国神社について説明する。
靖国神社は戦死した日本人を神として祀る場所だ。
戦争などで非業の死を迎えた者の霊を慰めるために神として祀るのは、日本における伝統的な弔い方だ。
死者を弔うのは別に日本だけに限った話ではない。
国のために戦って戦死した国民を弔うことはどこの国でも行っている。
例えばアメリカのアーリントン墓地だ。
靖国神社は日本版アーリントン墓地と言えるだろう」

deads are worshipped as deities in Yasukuni Jinja, but it is very

The lot area of Yasukuni Jinja is just about 100,000 m2. (This is 1/25 against that of Arlington National Cemetery.)
How can Yasukuni Jinja worship a lot of deads in such a small place?

Well, many foreigners often
misunderstand that Yasukuni Jinja has the graveyard for
Japanese war deads.
"Yasukuni Jinja" in Japanese is translated into English, "Yasukuni Shrine".
The Japanese Shinto shrine is the establishment to worship dieties like the ancient Greek temple, not to entomb the bodies of deads.
Therefore Yasukuni Jinja has no graveyard.
「さて、多くの外国人は靖国神社に戦歿者の墓地があると勘違いすることが多い。
それは“靖国神社”を英訳すると“靖国シュライン”と表現されるからだ。

In Japan, the war deads are entombed at
their familial graves, and kinless deads are entombed in
Chidorigafuchi Military Cemetery.
Then their souls are worshipped as deities in Yasukuni Jinja and Gokoku Jinjas.
Yasukuni Jinja is the most sacred shrine in Japan.
「日本では、戦死者の遺骸は各家庭の墓に祀り、その魂は靖国神社や護国神社に祀る。
そして、引き取り手のない遺骨は、千鳥ヶ淵（戦没者墓苑（に納める。

For a lot of
Europeans and Americans with faith in Christianity, it is very hard to
understand about the principle of Yasukuni Jinja. What is "Worshiping
the souls as deities"?
「キリスト教徒の多い欧米人には靖国神社の概念がわかりにくいわね。魂を祀るって何？」
Before I will explain about it,
I explain simply about Deities of Japan.
Original Deities of Japan don't save like The God of Christianity and Buddha of Buddhism, and don't bring good luck like deities of China.

As Deities of Japan can be called "violent deities", they have a dark side of the deity.
For example, Susanoo-no-mikoto who is famous by beating Eight-headed Dragon had ever been the deity who devastated Takamagahara where many deities live in. Izanami-no-mikoto who is the deity of the land creation and Mother of deities became the deity of the underworld, after she was dead and put a curse of the dead. Though the solar eclipse is commonly caused by the evil deity or the beast in myths of other countries, it is cased by Amaterasu-ohmikami who is the deity of Sun in Japan.
Japanese appeases such violent deities by "Worshipping", and prays for no disaster or the least disaster.
「それを説明する前に、日本における神のありかたについて説明しよう。
そもそも、日本の神とキリスト教の神とは根本的に別物なのだ。
本来日本の神は、キリスト教の神や印度の仏陀のように救ってもくれなければ、支那の神のように福をもたらしてもくれない。
日本の神は”荒ぶる神”とも呼ばれることもあるように、祟り神としての一面を持っている。
例えば日本神話で最も有名な素盞嗚命は後に八岐大蛇を退治をしたが、元々は高天原を荒らした神だ。国生みの神で神々の母であるはずの伊邪那美命も、死んだ後は呪いの言葉を吐き、冥府の神になっている。他国の神話では悪神が起こすはずの日蝕も、日本では太陽神である天照大神自身が自ら起こす。
日本ではこういった荒ぶる神を”祀る”ことで鎮め、できるだけ災いをもたらさぬよう祈願するのだ。」
Earthquakes,
tsunamis, volcano eruptions, typhoons and floods coming every year,
heavy snowfalls, and so on. It is a unique notion of Japan in where
natural disaster occurs very often.
「地震、津波、火山の噴火、毎年やってくる台風に洪水、大雪……。自然災害に富んだ日本ならではの発想ですね。」
That's
right.
And deities of Japan is worshipped, so they use their divine powers to give various divine aids.
Well, this is a slight another subjct, the Japanese thinks that the person who met in the ill end or died with a deep grudge become the evil spirit and cause heavy damages.
Masakado Taira and Michizane Sugawara are famous ones.
The Japanese thinks that it is possible to appease such a evil spirit by deifying. The Japanese worships the evil spirit as the deity, prays for no disaster, and wishes some devine aids.
Masakado Taira who fought against Yamato dynasty to establish the independent state in Kanto region had ever been the evilest sprit in Japanese history, but now he is called Kanda-myojin and worshipped as the deity of Tokyo Guardian.
Though Michizane Sugawara was a excellent literatus, was relegated far from the imperial capital to be defeated in politics, and died in obscurity. After his death, he became to the evil thunder spirit, and caused the huge damages to Yamato dynasty for long time. Despite this, now he is called Tenjin-sama, and worshipped as the deity of the scholarship by many students taking an entrance examination.
All of these things are to appease the powerful evil spirit.
It is an extension of these notions to worship war deads as deities in Yasukuni Jinja.
That is to say, it is unfortunate to die prematurely in the war. They must die with many regrets. But the souls of people who fought and died to guard Japan will be able to exert the power to guard Japan by worshipping as deities. And they wish also. ...the Japanese thinks so.
It is a reason to call them "Spirits of the Nation Guard."
「その通り。
また日本の神は祀られることで、その神通力に応じた様々な加護を与える。
さてこれとは別に日本には、非業の死を遂げたり怨みを残して死んだ者は怨霊となって祟る、と考えられている。
平将門や菅原道真などが有名だな。
日本では、こういった怨霊も神として祀れば鎮められる、と考える。神として祀って祟らないように祈り、その加護を願う。
関東に独立国を建てようとして朝廷と戦った平将門は日本史上最大の怨霊だったが、今では神田明神という神号で東京の守護神として祀られているし、かつては優れた学者であったが政争に敗れたために左遷され、辺境で不遇の生涯を送り死後雷を操る怨霊と化して朝廷に祟りまくった菅原道真も、天神様と呼ばれ学問の神様として祀られている。
これらは全部、怨霊を鎮めんが為である。
靖国神社で戦死者の霊を神として祀るのも、この発想の延長線上にある。
すなわち、戦争によって天寿を全うできなかったのは不幸である。きっと未練を残して死んだに違いない。しかし日本を守るため戦って死んだ者の霊であれば、神として祀ることで日本を守護する力を発揮することができるだろう。また彼らもそれを望んでいる、と日本人は考えるのだ。
これが護国の英霊と呼ばれる由縁だ。」
Well

「じゃあ、祀らなかったらどうなるの？」
Naturally
they cause various damages. Regardless of their wills, they must do.
Don't ask me why. This is what it is all about.
n this case, causing various damages means not being restful after their deaths.
Because they cause any damages, though they don't want.
Thus, by worshipping and appeasing, souls don't make disasters generated, and can finally get a rest since their deaths.
Therefore, worshipping war deads as deities is equal to praying for the souls in Japan.
「当然祟る。これは本人というか、本霊の意向とは無関係にそういうことになる。
何故かは訊くな。これはそういうものなんだ。
この場合祟るということは、死してなお安らかでいられないということだ。
祟りたくもないのに祟る羽目になるわけだからな。
だから英霊は祀られ鎮められることで祟りを起こさずに済むようになり、そこで初めて死後の安らぎを得る。
つまり戦死者を祀るということは、日本ではその霊を弔うということと同義なのだ。」
After
all, worshipping is for no disaster.
「結局祟られないために祀ってるわけね。」
Basically,

「基本的にはそういうことだ。実際はもっと複雑なのだがな」
I understand the assertion of Japan.
But Asian nations say that Yasukuni Jinja is a symbol of Japanese miletarism.

Foreign nations have no right to complain about how to pray for the repose of them.
"Three Stupid Nations" should stop the interference in the affairs of Japan.
All nations excluding "Three Stupid Nations" don't complain, and military and civilian officials of many nations have visited Yasukuni Jinja.
